Real Victim Behind the AI Face

Sanchi, a homemaker with no social media presence, only found out about the impersonation when media coverage started. Her family filed a police complaint on July 11, leading to a swift investigation.

Police arrested her ex-boyfriend, Pratim Bora, a mechanical engineer and self-taught AI enthusiast. He allegedly created the fake account to take revenge on Sanchi after their relationship ended. Using tools like ChatGPT and Dzine, Bora generated AI images and videos, morphing Sanchi’s old personal photos into explicit content.

Monetized Deepfake Account

According to Assam Police, Bora earned over 1 million INR from the account through platforms like Linktree, where 3,000 users had subscribed. He reportedly made 300,000 INR in just five days before being caught. Devices and bank records have been seized.

She also emphasized the need for responsible regulation, warning that not all deepfakes are harmful, and poorly written laws could restrict legitimate digital expression.

 Social Media Platforms Silent

Despite Meta’s policies against sexual content, the original Instagram account with over 280 posts has only recently been taken down. Many of the images still circulate on fan accounts. Meta has yet to respond to media inquiries about the case.

 What This Means for India

This case has sparked public outrage and renewed calls for stricter controls on AI misuse. While current laws cover many offenses, experts say there’s urgent need for AI-specific legislation to prevent similar abuses in the future.

 Key Takeaway:
This disturbing case is a wake-up call about the dark side of AI and deepfake technology. Without strong legal frameworks and fast action, more innocent people—especially women—could fall victim to such digital crimes.
