A disturbing incident from the Cholistan region of Rahim Yar Khan has sparked public outrage after a local landlord allegedly killed two camels with axes for entering his cultivated farmland. The owner of the camels, Abdul Khaliq, claims that the animals were brutally attacked by influential individuals in the area following a dispute over crop damage.
According to Khaliq, the camels were not intentionally grazing but strayed into the fields — a common occurrence in rural setups where livestock and farmland often overlap. He alleges that instead of resolving the matter peacefully, the suspects resorted to violence, slaughtering the animals in broad daylight.
Local police have confirmed that the incident took place three days ago and registered a case against 11 individuals following Khaliq’s complaint. A police spokesperson stated that while pre-arrest bail has been obtained by all accused, investigations are actively underway.
“We are gathering all available evidence and eyewitness accounts,” said the spokesperson. “No one will be spared if found guilty.”
The brutality of the act has stirred anger among local communities and animal welfare activists, many of whom have taken to social media demanding swift justice. Several rights organizations have condemned the violence, calling it a reflection of deep-rooted land-livestock tensions in rural Punjab.
The incident has reignited the debate over landowner-livestock conflicts in agricultural regions, where herders often struggle to find safe grazing grounds without encroaching on cultivated land.
Residents of the area are now urging authorities to take concrete action and ensure that such acts of cruelty do not go unpunished. Legal experts stress the need to uphold animal protection laws and address power dynamics that often shield influential figures from accountability.
